Thomas Chase | Statement

The relationship between anxiety and nature forms the basis of my recent works. Nature has become an obsessive combat to my anxiety; I have been taught to focus on the biology of my anxiety, how the systems in place trigger feelings irrespective of the source. Irrational fear of blood disease triggers the same systems as a lion walking into my cave.

These recent paintings aim to provoke a detachment between anxiety and nature - they are images taken from nature documentaries and are painted in colours that reference nature yet have become plastic and institutionalised. The intention is to create a discordance between nature and anxiety that reflects the cognitive behavioural teaching to understand anxiety through the biological and ingrained systems we cannot control.
